Slater Shows Bipartisan Support for Expectant Mother’s Health
Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) joined a bipartisan coalition in supporting expectant mothers through the passage of several pieces of legislation in the New York State Assembly.
Acknowledging the alarming maternal health crisis in the United States, where mortality rates surpass those of similar developed nations, Slater voted in favor of various solutions. These include proposals to incorporate maternal depression screenings into routine care, enhance access to prenatal, intranatal, and postpartum care (doulas), and integrate such provisions into Social Services Law. By advocating for stakeholder initiatives to study, evaluate, and recommend improvements in maternal health care and birthing standards, Slater emphasizes the need for ensuring the highest quality of care for patients.
“Recognizing the maternal health crisis is crucial, and it's imperative that we collaboratively devise effective solutions. We must prioritize the well-being of those carrying the gift of life, ensuring they receive the comprehensive support and resources essential for a positive and healthy experience,” said Slater.
Continuing his unwavering commitment to women's health, he has initiated the introduction of a requirement for maternal health care providers. This entails facilitating a crucial screening for maternal depression within the pivotal first six weeks after birth, aiming to proactively address and support the mental well-being of new mothers.
