Slater Hosts Second Annual Blood Drive with American Red Cross in Carmel
Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) and the American Red Cross hosted a blood drive in Carmel on Friday, July 18 to help support the ongoing need for lifesaving blood donations.
With donated blood expiring in 42 days or less, a steady stream of donations is critical. According to the Red Cross, someone in the U.S. needs blood or platelets every two seconds. However, only about 3% of age-eligible Americans donate each year.
During the blood drive, 21 total units were collected (16 Whole Blood units and 5 Power Red Units), which has the potential to save up to 63 lives. Slater and the Red Cross were proud to welcome seven first-time donors among the 19 total participants.
“Thanks to all who came out to give blood. It only takes a few minutes, but you’re giving someone the chance at years of life,” said Slater. “Donating blood is one of the easiest and most powerful ways to give back. It was great to see so many residents show up and prove once again that our community cares deeply for one another.”
The American Red Cross said, “A big thank you to Assemblyman Matt Slater for generously supporting our recent blood drive! Summer can be a tough time to collect donations—between holiday travel, summer storms and busy schedules, it’s easy for the blood supply to drop. Thanks to this partnership, we were able to help ensure that patients—especially those in emergencies—have the lifesaving blood they need. Every donor who showed up made a real difference, and we’re so grateful for the support from Assemblyman Slater and the local community.”
Carmel Town Supervisor Michael Cazzari, who attended the blood drive for the second consecutive year, praised the effort, saying, “Giving blood helps save lives; it’s a simple way to make a big difference.”
“If you couldn’t make it this time, it’s never too late to donate. Keep an eye out for future blood drives hosted by my office or visit the Red Cross Web site, use the app, or call 1-800-RED CROSS to find a donation site near you,” Slater added.
