Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick (R,C,I-Smithtown) today saluted the efforts of his minority conference leaders and his Assembly colleagues over the past few months in forcing passage of tougher Sex Offender Registry provision under Megan’s Law.

“The reason we have tougher Sex Offender Registry requirements is due to the dedication and continuous effort of our conference’s leadership and my colleagues,” said Fitzpatrick. “By not settling on weak majority proposals, New Yorkers now have stronger, tougher and more meaningful registry laws.”

The new legislation continues to require Level 3 offenders to register for life. The changes to the current statute require Level 2 offenders to register for 30 years, after which time they may petition judges for removal. In addition, Level 1 offenders will be required to register for 20 years rather than the current 10 years.
