Novakhov Backs Effort for Stricter Bail Laws for Fentanyl Dealers
Today, Assemblyman Michael Novakhov (R-Brooklyn) voiced his support for a bipartisan effort to implement stricter bail laws for those accused of selling fentanyl. This effort is led by both Minority and Majority lawmakers in both chambers of the Legislature, including Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Stanton (D-Staten Island/South Brooklyn), Sen. Andrew Lanza (R,C-Staten Island) and Assemblyman Michael Tannousis (R,C-Staten Island/Brooklyn).
“The number of unnecessary deaths as a result of illegal fentanyl is appalling. There is no reason why we shouldn’t be taking more action to save lives, one of those steps is to simply make dealing fentanyl, which is a Class-B Felony, eligible for bail. This is not about politics, it is simply about saving lives, that is why I am happy to see members of both parties come together and demand that we protect the people of New York,” said Novakhov.
“These dealers are knowingly killing their victims by intentionally cutting their drugs with fentanyl because it is cheaper that way, and they can make more money. We simply cannot allow those who willingly cause the deaths of New Yorkers to continue to roam our streets and cause more death and destruction to our communities,” concluded Novakhov.
