A Reflection on My First Year in Albany
Statement by Assemblyman Michael Novakhov (R-Brooklyn)
Albany, NY- “As a freshman Minority member of the Assembly, I reflect on the 2023 Legislative Session with a mix of pride, frustration and a renewed commitment to my principles. This session was marked by intense debates, partisan clashes and the pursuit of policies I believe will benefit our constituents and uphold the values we hold dear.
“I am proud to have been part of a party that remained steadfast in promoting limited government, individual liberty and fiscal responsibility. Throughout the session, we championed policies that aimed to reduce burdensome regulations, lower taxes and create an environment conducive to economic growth. I firmly believe these measures will stimulate entrepreneurship, create job opportunities and improve the lives of everyday citizens.
“However, I must admit that the session was not without its frustrations. Despite our best efforts, several of our key proposals were met with strong opposition from the opposing party. The debates often devolved into partisan bickering, making it challenging to find common ground and enact meaningful change. It was disheartening to witness how political gamesmanship sometimes overshadowed the true purpose of serving our constituents and improving their lives.
“Nonetheless, I am resolved to continue fighting for the principles I hold dear. While progress may sometimes be slow, I firmly believe that by maintaining a steadfast commitment to our core values, we can make a positive difference in the lives of the people we represent. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve and look forward to future legislative sessions where we can build upon our successes and work toward a better, more prosperous future for all.”
