Assemblymember Monica Wallace (D-Lancaster) will be hosting a free consumer protection seminar to inform neighbors about common fraud tactics and steps that can be taken to protect your personal and financial independence. The event will be co-hosted by the Office of the New York State Attorney General. The discussion will be held at 6:30pm on Wednesday, September 19 at the Cheektowaga Senior Center (3349 Broadway, Cheektowaga, NY 14227).

“Consumer fraud schemes are getting more sophisticated by the day,” said Assemblymember Wallace. “Schemers now adopt phone numbers that appear similar to our own in the hopes of tricking us into thinking we may know who is calling, but it's our personal information they're after. What's worse is that these scammers frequently target older adults, too often succeeding in their scams and robbing them of their financial security.”

“Now more than ever, consumers have to be vigilant in knowing how to spot a scam or a fraud,” said Karen Davis of the New York State Attorney General’s Senior Consumer Fraud office. “With ever increasing reports of identity theft and security breaches, events like this help to give consumers up to date information on what they can do to protect themselves.”

“Scam artists have no boundaries when they go after people’s identities, which is why we all need to be aware how to better protect ourselves,” said Cheektowaga Senior Services Director Kerry Peek. “Even if you’ve attended scam & fraud presentations before, the information is constantly changing and you will definitely benefit from this seminar. Nobody plans to be scammed and often times we don’t even realize our actions and habits make us vulnerable and put us at risk.”
