Today, Assemblymember Monica Wallace (D-Lancaster) commended Governor Cuomo for heeding calls from herself, fellow lawmakers, and business owners to provide reopening guidance to businesses and industries that remain closed. Today, Governor Cuomo announced that bowling alleys across the state will begin reopening on Monday, August 17, and that guidance for reopening gyms and fitness centers will be forthcoming early next week.

On August 7, Assemblymember Wallace sent a letter urging Governor Cuomo to provide guidance and clarity to businesses that remain closed, such as bowling alleys, movie theaters, gyms, and spa service providers. In her letter, Wallace expressed her view that it was “unfair and contrary to any notion of transparency in government” to leave businesses wondering when, if ever, they will be permitted to reopen safely during this crisis.

“I’m pleased that Governor Cuomo has heard our calls to provide answers to the thousands of small business owners across the state that still remain closed,” said Assemblymember Wallace.

“With this new guidance, countless business owners and employees will be able to return to work and New Yorkers will have new opportunities for recreation and maintaining good health.”

“I’m very happy with the news. This is a great step in the right direction for the local bowling centers,” said Jim Reese, of Jim Reese’s Pro Shop at Lancaster Lanes. “We look forward to welcoming all of our bowlers back.”

Bowling alleys will be required to limit occupancy to 50 percent capacity, keep every other lane closed, mandate that patrons wear face coverings, and follow disinfecting protocols. “I believe these guidelines, if adhered to, will allow New York to maintain its success in containing COVID-19,” said Assemblymember Wallace. “As always, it’s on all of us to follow the public health guidelines, so that we can continue to control this virus, reopen our economy, and save lives.”

Governor Cuomo has yet to issue guidance for several other closed industries, such as movie theaters, spa service providers, and pool halls. Wallace reiterated her call to give those additional businesses, especially movie theaters, reopening guidance.

“I urge the Governor to issue similar guidance to other businesses that remain closed and to explore opportunities to allow these businesses to reopen without compromising public health,” said Assemblymember Wallace.
