Albany, NY – In response to the State Senate Majority’s inability to reach an agreement on mayoral control of New York City schools, Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D,WF-Fresh Meadows) issued the following statement:

“The New York State Assembly has always made it clear that we work to put children and families first. It is frustrating to come away from this year’s legislative session after the Senate Majority could not do the same by extending mayoral control.

As a member of the Assembly Majority, I have been supportive of the mayoral control governance structure, which is why I voted to pass a two-year extension. New York’s students and schools should always be a priority that is not obstructed by political interests. With mayoral control now set to expire, I remain committed to working with my colleagues to uphold the quality of public education in New York City schools.”

Back in May, the Assembly passed legislation that would have extended mayoral control for two years. Last year, the State Legislature agreed on a one-year extension that will expire on June 30, 2017.
