New York, NY – To celebrate the start of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D,WF-Fresh Meadows) issued the following statement:

“As a member of the Asian Pacific American Task Force and Queens resident, I am proud to recognize Asian American / Pacific Islander Heritage Month. In Assembly District 25, AAPI constituents make up about 50% of our total demographic, and we are excited to continue partnering with numerous service providers, advocacy groups, and community organizations that serve our district.

The first of this month also marks International Workers’ Day, and so it is appropriate to distinguish Asian American / Pacific Islander workers who have historically advocated for fair working conditions, civic engagement, and comprehensive community services for all. This month, and every month, we pay respect to the cultural heritages, political advocacy, and diversity of experience within the AAPI communities.”

In 1992, the federal government designated the month of May as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in commemoration of the long history and continued contributions of the AAPI community. The month of May was chosen in honor of the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States and the Chinese immigrants who made up the majority of the workers on the transcontinental railroad which was completed on May 10, 1869.
