Assemblymember Hunter: Access to Affordable Contraception is Critical to Women’s Health
“The Trump administration’s decision to roll back federal requirements for employers to provide coverage for birth control is a huge blow to women’s rights, leaving many women scrambling to figure out how they will afford this critical piece of their health care.
“This isn’t about politics – access to affordable birth control goes beyond the choice debate. Some women with reproductive health disorders rely on birth control to alleviate their symptoms. Limiting their access to contraceptives puts their health at risk and places an unfair barrier between women and the care they need.
“As a woman and a veteran, it saddens me that we are still fighting to make our own reproductive health care decisions. The Assembly Majority stands with women in every corner of the state and strives to protect and strengthen reproductive rights. This year, we passed the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act, which would require health insurers to cover all FDA-approved contraceptives at no cost to the insured (A.1378). One of the best things we can do at a time like this is stand together and make it clear that New York will not tolerate any attacks on women’s reproductive rights.”
