US Army Veteran served as Infantryman Medic.

(Cheektowaga, New York) In commemoration of Vietnam War Veterans Day, Assemblyman Patrick Chludzinski (R, C, 143rd District) presented United States Army Veteran, and Town of Cheektowaga resident, James E. Schmukal with a citation recognizing his dedicated service.

“As a veteran, I understand firsthand the sacrifices our service members make and the challenges they face both in uniform and when they return home,” said Chludzinski. “Vietnam Veterans Day is an opportunity to give these heroes the recognition they deserve, ensuring their bravery and sacrifices are never forgotten.”

Mr. Schmukal was drafted into the United States Army and received his basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas before undergoing advanced training as a medic at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. He served as an Infantryman Medic with the 9th Division in Vietnam, providing emergency medical care to soldiers in the field, stabilizing them until they could be safely evacuated.

“The duties of an Infantryman Medic were often performed under dangerous and strenuous circumstances and were critical to the hopes of survival for those wounded and injured,” said Chludzinski.“Medics like Jim Schmukal are to be commended for their bravery in service to their fellow soldiers.”

Vietnam Veterans Day serves as a solemn reminder of the hardships and heroism of those who served, many of whom did not receive the gratitude they earned when they came home.March 29th was selected as the official day of observance because it was on this day in 1973 that the United States Military Assistance Command Vietnam was disestablished and the last of the U.S. combat troops left the country.

The Assemblyman also reaffirmed his commitment to standing with veterans, advocating for the resources and support they need.

“We can never fully repay the great debt our state and nation owe these men and women, but we must always honor their service and ensure they receive the care and respect they have earned,” Chludzinski concluded.
