“My Assembly colleagues and I passed legislation today that calls for a two year delay in aspects of the Common Core and testing. Parents, students, teachers, and countless interested parties have spoken out on this issue, and the Assembly has listened. The state has a tremendous responsibility in educating our children, and I believe this time will give us the opportunity to make the necessary adjustments. Our children deserve a quality education, and in order to do so we need to ensure things are fair in the classroom. There were many things that were unfair in the implementation of the Common Core, especially the obsession with testing students, failure to account for the needs of students with disabilities, and the lack of clear available curriculum to guide teachers in their work. I will continue to fight for the students and I look forward to improving the implementation of the Common Core.”
