Assemblymember Steck: Assembly Bill Could Make New York a Leader in Safely Regulating MMA
“Amateur mixed-martial arts (MMA), such as the bouts in Schenectady this weekend, are occurring throughout the state with very little oversight. Recognizing this, New York can and should become a leader in regulating the industry and providing for the health and safety of those involved.
“I support legislation that is currently before the Assembly that would require amateur bouts to operate – like amateur boxing – under the auspices of a sanctioning body approved by the New York State Athletic Commission. The legislation would also legalize the professional competition level, and require the New York State Athletic Commission to license promoters of combative sports to provide continuous accident insurance for athletes. In addition, it would require athletes to undergo medical examinations to ensure their health and safety. Under this legislation, the Department of State and other government agencies would also make recommendations for programs to provide long-term care to professional boxers and MMA participants who develop degenerative brain conditions.
“My predecessor in the Assembly, Bob Reilly, deserves credit for his principled stand against legalizing professional MMA in the state; however, the legislation has since been amended to include key measures that would regulate the sport in a safe manner.
“Let us show once again that New York is leading the way and doing what’s right for these athletes. There is a great deal to be gained by legalizing professional MMA and properly regulating amateur MMA in New York State when common sense, protective reforms are included.”
