Assemblymember Steck Appointed to Labor Committee
Assemblymember Phil Steck (D-Colonie) announced his appointment to the Assembly Labor Committee. Steck has been a longtime advocate for workers’ rights, having supported and authored several measures to protect employees.
“Every New York worker deserves to be treated well and paid fairly,” said Steck. “I’ll continue to fight to protect all workers and hold corporations accountable.”
Last year, Steck introduced legislation that would hold out-of-state and foreign limited liability corporations (LLCs) accountable for unpaid wages (A.8712 of 2016). This legislation has since been adopted by Governor Cuomo as one of his main proposals in this year’s State of the State address. Steck also authored a law ensuring that out-of-state and foreign corporations are held to the same standard as companies based in New York, placing responsibility for back wages on the 10 largest shareholders of a corporation that operates, regardless of location (Ch.421 of 2015). Under the law, all businesses, regardless of which state or country they’re formed in, pay New Yorkers their full and just wages even if the company fails. Moreover, Steck has also sponsored legislation to guarantee sick and vacation time for all employees
(A.735 of 2016).
As a labor lawyer and a member of the National Employment Lawyers Association, Steck has made workers’ rights and fair representation a top priority. In the Assembly, he has been a staunch advocate for fair pay and workers’ rights and will continue this critical work.
