Standing Room Only for Single Payer Town Hall in Colonie
On June 6th NY Assemblymember Phil Steck (D-Colonie) hosted a Town Hall forum to discuss the New York Health Act with constituents. The event was held in the Stedman Room at the William K. Sanford Town Library with all seats filled and standing space hard to come by. Over 150 people came out to attend. Dozens came and left for lack of available space as demand exceeded capacity.
The forum featured a panel discussion with the New York Health Act’s author Assemblyman Richard N. Gottfried (D-Manhattan), Ashley Fox, PhD, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Public Administration and Policy, University at Albany, Dr. Paul Sorum, MD, PhD, Dept. of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, Albany Medical College, and Susan Beckley, Finger Lakes Single Payer, Small Business Administrator.
The discussion went into great depth about the Health Act, its benefits, and the potential cost savings for New York residents and businesses alike. The discussion was also streamed on Facebook Live from Assemblymember Steck’s official Facebook page and has received over 35,000 views as of this press release.
“The recent activities of the current federal government have placed the issue of healthcare in the public spotlight,” said Steck. “I’m am pleased to see that my constituents are interested in a better way forward for New Yorkers that covers everyone and saves money. I believe we are beginning to see a large consensus that the United States must join the rest of the world in providing healthcare to all people as a right. Let’s start in New York State.”
