Statement on the Governor Referring to CDPAP as a “Racket”
“The consumer directed personal assistance program, or CDPAP, is a lifeline to my disabled and older constituents, and the family members who take care of them. In stark contrast to the history of unpaid care work, primarily done by women, CDPAP pays a family member to give care as long as the State has deemed them qualified. The Governor’s questioning of the program’s success by likening it to a racket on the basis of Tik Tok videos is insensitive to the plight of families who not only depend on home care, but who also want care to be given by someone familiar. Given that New York leads the nation in home care shortage, CDPAP is not the program to go after – on the contrary, we should look to it as an example of centering our economy around care work.”
