Assemblyman Scott Gray’s (R-Watertown) sponsored bill A.5128-A was passed yesterday, June 9, in Albany, designating a portion of the state highway system as the “Firefighter Peyton L. S. Morse Memorial Highway” in the hamlet of La Fargeville, town of Orleans, Jefferson County. A LaFargeville native, Morse was a beloved member of his community, devoted volunteer and generous young man who tragically died in March of 2021 during a training exercise at the New York State Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls.

“I’d like to thank my colleagues for your support on this bill. Peyton Morse was a young hero, a volunteer firefighter who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. This legislation serves to pay tribute to Mr. Morse, his contributions to his community and the legacy he leaves behind.

“In February of 2021, Peyton began his dream job of becoming a fireman in the city of Watertown. While completing training and evaluation, Peyton suffered a medical emergency. He passed Friday, March 12th, 2021. This dedication symbolizes the remembrance of a remarkable young life, lost way too soon. This highway being named after Peyton will inspire all who travel it to emulate Peyton’s selfless dedication to service. Peyton has left a lasting mark on the Watertown Fire Department and the North Country community as a whole,” Gray said.
