‘The Gray Area’ Discusses Measures Against Squatting, NYS Budget Delay
Assemblyman Scott Gray (R-Watertown) released the latest episode of “The Gray Area” video series. In this week’s episode, Gray discusses a new bill introduced to address squatting-related incidents across New York state and the New York state budget delay.
“This week, the Assembly Minority Conference introduced bill A.6894, which redefines what constitutes a tenant, effectively stripping squatters of their tenant status. By criminalizing squatting as trespassing, the bill empowers land and property owners to reclaim their rightful ownership and remove those who refuse to pay due rent. This measure is a direct response to the pervasive issue of squatters plaguing communities across New York state.”
In response to the extension of the New York state budget deadline, Gray said, “Gov. Hochul’s extension of the budget deadline ensures the continued operation of our state government until next Thursday. We will return next week after Easter to hopefully begin working in earnest on the budget. What we did do this week was pass the first of 10 budget bills, the debt service bill, a crucial step in meeting the state’s financial obligations.”
“This week we welcomed an array of visitors, including the Jefferson-Lewis Board of Realtors and the Rural Resources Fair, which showcased the importance of rural New York. Notably, we honored Vietnam veterans in a ceremony, as well as introduced veterans from across the state in the Assembly Chamber. Additionally, a productive meeting with Commissioner Reardon and Department of Labor leadership addressed vital inquiries from constituents, further strengthening our commitment to serving the community.”
“Look out for next week’s episode of The Gray Area as we continue to update you on what you care about. We always appreciate the opportunity to serve you and to work with you. Don’t hesitate to call my office staff with questions, comments or concerns—see you soon,” Gray concluded.
