Gray Discusses ‘Border Czar’ Tom Homan’s Visit, One-House Budget Amendments & Executive Order on Correctional Officers in ‘The Gray Area’
Assemblyman Scott Gray (R-Watertown) released the latest episode of “The Gray Area” video series. In this week’s episode, Gray breaks down the latest developments in Albany, including the state budget, the ongoing dispute over correction officers’ employment and border security concerns.
“With the budget process in full swing, we are reviewing the governor’s proposed $252 billion plan, which is $15 billion higher than last year’s adopted budget,” said Gray. “We need to ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly and not at an unsustainable pace that outstrips inflation.”
Gray also addressed the controversial Executive Order 47.3, which prohibits the reemployment of 2,000 correction officers terminated under the governor’s administration.
“This overreach prevents dedicated officers from seeking other employment within any level of government, including state, county and local positions. It’s unacceptable,” said Gray. “We have already called on the governor to issue a 48-hour stay to reconsider this policy, and Oneida County has filed a lawsuit challenging it. We’ll continue to monitor this issue closely.”
Gray voiced concerns over border security and New York’s Green Light Law, which restricts local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. He welcomed his friend, U.S. Border Czar Tom Homan, a West Carthage native, for a joint Senate and Assembly press conference to discuss border security and U.S. territorial integrity—key issues for Gray’s northern border district.
“This is an issue that directly affects my constituents. Law enforcement agencies need the ability to communicate and collaborate to keep our communities safe,” said Gray.
“For visitors this week, we welcomed the Medical Society of the State of New York, the PBA for a breakfast meeting and the New York State Pipe Trades to discuss key legislation. We also celebrated SUNY Educational Opportunity Programs award recipients to recognize their perseverance in overcoming challenges to further their education.”
“Look out for next week’s episode of The Gray Area as we continue to update you on what you care about. We always appreciate the opportunity to serve you and to work with you. Don’t hesitate to call my office staff with questions, comments or concerns—see you soon,” Gray concluded.
