Honoring Service and Sacrifice: Leader Barclay & Assembly Members Celebrate Veterans
On Wednesday, Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay (R,C-Pulaski) and members of the Assembly Minority Conference honored Vietnam veterans at the New York State Capitol in recognition of National Vietnam War Veterans Day, which is observed on March 29.
Leader Barclay was joined by distinguished Vietnam veteran Doug Bower. A retired Navy Seabee with 26 years of service, Bower served in Vietnam in 1971 and retired in 1997. He previously held the role of national vice commander for the Seabees, the Navy’s construction force. Bower also worked under retired Navy Rear Adm. John Paddock, co-founder of Honor Flight. Currently residing in Hannibal, Bower dedicates his time renovating and volunteering at the New Haven American Legion.
During the celebration, veterans enjoyed a luncheon and had the opportunity to tour the Capitol. Later, in the legislative session proceedings, Bower and other attendees were recognized on the Assembly Floor. Additionally, the Assembly passed a resolution recognizing March 29, 2025, as Vietnam Veterans Day in New York. This proclamation paid tribute to the bravery, sacrifice and service of Vietnam veterans in defending the nation’s freedoms. Their courage was celebrated by all in attendance, ensuring that their legacy of service is never forgotten.
