Remember What is Truly Important this Memorial Day
Column from Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay
Memorial Day takes on even greater significance here in New York, as its origins can be traced back to Waterloo in 1866. What was originally known as “Decoration Day” in the years following the Civil War has now become a national holiday celebrating the sacrifices of all our nation’s fallen heroes.
New York has always had a proud tradition of honoring our armed forces, and this year, I am looking forward to the many meaningful events happening throughout our area that will do just that. For those celebrating in Central New York, there is no shortage of ways to participate. I expect Fulton’s Memorial Day parade, which kicks off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, and its 7 p.m. watchfire at the Fulton War Memorial will be especially enjoyable.
Further, displays, performances and exhibits will be set up outside the Weedsport Junior-Senior High School, located at 2821 East Brutus St., on Memorial Day for those who would like to walk by or drive through. Additional local event listings, including those in Cayuga, Oswego and Jefferson counties, can be found here.
These events help us focus and reflect on the proud legacy of our nation’s fallen warriors. It is my hope that these events inspire and motivate us to be better participants in our democracy, better members of our communities and better individuals. This is how we truly honor those who died protecting our freedoms.
Whatever you decide to do this weekend, please consider the true spirit of the day. Of course, enjoy your family and friends, and should the weather cooperate, enjoy the many great destinations we have here in New York. Keep in mind though, freedom isn’t free, and its cost is paid for by brave soldiers who deserve enormous admiration, respect and praise.
