Magnarelli: Governor’s Veto of Syracuse Schools Rehab Funding Unconscionable
"The governor’s veto of legislation I authored providing $174 million to reconstruct up to seven buildings in the Syracuse City School District is a disservice to our children. Schools in Syracuse are in serious disrepair, jeopardizing the education of the city’s students. My bill would have allowed the school district to seek fiscally sound options to help reconstruct and rehabilitate dilapidated schools.
"The governor’s veto prevents modern classrooms from being built and adversely impacts local jobs. As disappointed as I am in the governor’s decision, it’s not surprising when you look at his track record. He has a long history of shortchanging our schools. I invite the governor to take his road show to Syracuse where I’d be happy to give him a tour of our schools. Despite this setback, I will work with the governor and Senator DeFrancisco to craft legislation that will help the Syracuse City School District provide a quality education to our children and bring much-needed jobs to local families."
