Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli (D-Syracuse) announced today that that the Town of Geddes, the Village of Solvay and the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCRRA) have all been awarded state grants for their recycling operations. Specifically: Town of Geddes: $26,067 for recycling equipment.
Village of Solvay: $73,661 for recycling equipment.
Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency: $325,165 for recycling equipment. “It is vital that we do all we can to protect our environment,” said Magnarelli. “These grants will help ensure recycling is an easy way for everyone to do their part.” The grants come from DEC’s Municipal Waste Reduction and Recycling grant program which provides up to 50 percent reimbursement to local governments for eligible project costs. Magnarelli said that he has also sponsored legislation that aims to reduce the negative impact we have on our environment. To ensure that recyclables make it to the recycling center and not to landfills, he is a sponsor of legislation to prohibit private and municipal waste haulers from delivering recyclable materials to landfills or incinerators and which materials must, at a minimum, be separated for recycling, according to local law (A.3318). Magnarelli noted New York State is a major contributor of greenhouse gases and an important player in the global economy. “In order to promote scientific and economic growth, I authored legislation that was passed by the Assembly to establish the New York state greenhouse gases management research and development program,” said Magnarelli. The Assemblyman’s legislation provides grants to research entities in New York in order to promote the State’s potential as a global leader in global warming and climate control issues (A.3414). “We are all responsible for our environment,” said Magnarelli. “As a legislator, I will continue to support legislation that will help protect our families and stop threats to our limited natural resources.”
