Assembly Minority Unveils 3-Point Plan That Would Provide Relief At The Gas Pumps

The Long Island Assembly minority delegation today introduced a three-point plan that would offer short- and long-term relief for motorists. The plan would cut gas taxes, promote alternative fuels and vehicles and fast-track availability of ethanol fuel (E-85) at the 27 Thruway Service Stations. Currently, E-85 fuel is nearly 60 cents less a gallon.

"Here on Long Island, motorists are keenly aware of the exorbitant increases in gas prices. During these tough times, the profits reaped by oil producers and the state at the expense of motorists must be limited. These monies should be used to increase our alternative fuel options," said Assemblyman David G. McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick). "The multi-billion dollar tourist industry on Long Island depends on vacationers from May through September. If gas prices continue their current trend, the effects on local businesses may come in diminished travel and financial losses for many seasonal businesses."

In New York, there are currently seven taxes on a gallon of gasoline. The federal tax rate is 18.4 cents and the state taxes account for 33 cents (local taxes are approximately 11 cents). This is much higher than neighboring states.

The Assembly minority is proposing a reduction in gas taxes to the point where they will be in line with the average northeast state tax rate. This would save motorists 12.5 cents per gallon right off the bat.

They also call for using the remaining sales tax revenue on gasoline to create the "Alternative Fuel Incentive Fund." This fund would provide tax credits, grants, investments and other incentives that would encourage the ownership of hybrid and flex-fuel vehicles and the building of alternative fueling stations and refineries, expanding the availability of these fuels in New York state.

Additionally, the proposal calls for accelerating the transition to alternative fuels. This would lower fuel costs through a lessened demand for gasoline, as well as provide for a cleaner environment, more agricultural jobs, more manufacturing jobs and greater national security through greater energy independence.
