Gunther delivers tax relief for working families

More tax relief for Orange County. In this year’s budget, Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther voted to override the governor’s vetoes to put money back in your pockets.

Tax relief for working families

With a maximum benefit of $330 for each child from 4 to 17 for every family in the state, the Empire State Child Tax Credit provides real tax relief to New York’s working families.

In addition, we eliminated the regressive 4 percent state sales tax on clothing under $110, saving Orange County shoppers about $12 million a year.

The bipartisan budget agreement also eliminated the marriage penalty tax, saving married couples $41 million annually when fully phased in.

Homeowner Tax Relief

The Legislature’s budget would provide families with significant property tax relief, including a Basic STAR rebate averaging $240 in Orange County, an average Enhanced STAR rebate of $395 and a bipartisan-approved cost-of-living adjustment to Enhanced STAR, which would save eligible seniors an average of $179 in Orange County - bringing the average Enhanced STAR exemption to roughly $1,500

Unfortunately, the governor vetoed the Basic and Enhanced STAR rebates.

The Legislature’s budget:
  • Creates an income tax credit for volunteer firefighters, saving them $25 million when fully phased in

  • Provides a tax deduction for members of the National Guard called to federal service, saving them $1 million

  • Increases aid to municipalities by at least 20 percent to help keep local taxes down

Call the governor at (518) 474-8390 and tell him we need property tax rebates.

"Skyrocketing property taxes are forcing people out of their homes and businesses out of our state. Tax rebates will put dollars back into the pockets of Orange County residents and back in the economies of local communities."

  • Providing property tax rebates that, unfortunately, the governor is threatening to block
