Assemblymember Cahill wants you to know your rights as a consumer |
In 2000, Ulster County Consumer Affairs Director Jonathan Van Vlack crafted a local law that requires checkout
accuracy and the clear display of prices on most grocery goods. The measure provides a SUPER REFUND for
customers and tough fines against supermarkets where register scanners fail to accurately reflect a food item’s
marked price.
So that all New Yorkers can benefit from the same protections that Ulster County consumers enjoy, and to make it permanent for our residents, I introduced a statewide checkout accuracy law in the Assembly (A.206). Time and again, I hear firsthand of the effectiveness of our law. Simply put, it works and it can work for everyone. I urge you to clip and save the card below as a reminder of your rights as an Ulster County consumer.

I always welcome your thoughts on these and other issues.

Working to protect consumers |
Keeping your personal information private Identity theft occurs when a criminal steals personal information, like social security or credit card numbers and then uses it fraudulently – potentially costing victims thousands of dollars. That’s why Assemblymember Cahill supported a law that gives victims the ability to seek compensation for their losses and strengthens protection against identity theft (Ch. 619 of 2002). Protecting taxpayers’ money Assemblymember Cahill voted for a law that requires the State Department of Taxation to notify residents who overpay on their taxes (Ch. 307 of 2001). |
