Fighting for
Central New
York Families
“Substantial progress was made this past year as the Assembly passed an on-time budget, invested in our schools, provided Medicaid relief, and further protected our families from sexual predators. However, we still have much to accomplish. I am confident that my colleagues and I can continue tackling these important issues in a fair and bipartisan manner.”

Protecting our families from sexual predators

“No crime is more heinous than that which robs the innocence of a young child. That’s why I am committed to doing everything possible to protect our children.”
New laws make our families’ safety a priority
  • Require children’s camps to cross reference job applicants with New York’s sex offender registry (Ch. 260 of 2005)

  • Require Level 3 sex offenders placed on conditional release or parole to be banned from entering school grounds or other facilities where children are cared for (Ch. 544 of 2005)

  • Provide mandatory life sentences for those convicted of murder during a sex crime with a victim under 14 (Ch. 459 of 2004)

  • Require the state Division of Criminal Justice Services to work with local law enforcement officers to implement the Amber Alert child abduction system statewide (Ch. 348 of 2005)

Assemblyman Magnarelli supports the Assembly’s plan for civil confinement of sexual predators

The Assembly’s plan to protect our communities and families from sexual predators through civil confinement and longer sentences is comprehensive, tough and effective. It would impose maximum life sentences on the most serious sex offenses and keep the most dangerous predators confined or intensely monitored after their sentences are completed. Assemblyman Magnarelli will also work to ensure the final version of the plan offers improved services for victims.

Investing in our schools

“We have to protect our schools and universities without overburdening taxpayers. By making a sound investment in our school and university systems, they can continue providing top-notch education.”

Assemblyman Magnarelli helped invest in education by:
  • Securing a $15.3 million increase in aid for schools in the 120th Assembly District last year

  • Securing $3.6 million in funding for SUNY Forestry capital projects and $23 million for building improvements at SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse

  • Supporting the creation of the Higher Education Capital Matching Grants Program which will provide Central New York’s SUNY and private colleges with millions in funding to help them renovate or build on their campuses

Holding the line on property taxes

Assemblyman Magnarelli has worked to:

  • Save Onondaga County $12.3 million by capping Medicaid costs on counties for the coming year, easing the burden Medicaid places on local property taxpayers

  • Secure $49.1 million in funding to aid important public services sectors such as our local police and fire departments, sanitation, and other local service programs and agencies that help to preserve our families’ safety and quality of life

“Skyrocketing health care costs are being forced onto local taxpayers. To help take the burden off of our communities, I fought to cap the costs shifted to our county.”

Tool to keep your family safe
Anyone over the age of 18 can find out whether a person is listed in the Sex Offender Registry free of charge by calling (800) 262-3257.

To learn the status of an individual, a caller must have the individual’s name, or at least one of the following identifiers: the individual’s street address, apartment number, drivers license number, social security number or birth date.

Local law enforcement agencies are notified whenever a sex offender moves into their jurisdiction. The agency may notify schools and other entities with vulnerable populations about the presence of a Level 2 or Level 3 offender if the offender poses a threat to public safety.

Information about Level 3 sex offenders is distributed to law enforcement agencies throughout the state. Anyone can review that information at local law enforcement agencies or via the Internet at http://criminaljustice.state.ny.us/nsor/search_index.htm.
