Assemblyman William Magnarelli

“A military funeral is a time to honor and mourn the loss of someone who has made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, not a time for family to be harassed by protestors.”

— Assemblyman William Magnarelli

The Assembly passed legislation to honor America’s fallen heroes by:

star
Allowing localities to require permits for demonstrators
Demonstrators who wish to come within 1,000 feet of a wake, funeral or burial service would have to obtain a permit from the locality where the service is taking place (A.7697).

star
Expanding the buffer zone around services
Protestors would have to keep a 300-foot radius around the service. The current radius is 100 feet (A.7698).

star
Ensuring violators are punished
Individuals who violate these new measures would face a fine of up to $500 for a first-time violation, up to $1,000 for a second violation and up to $2,000 for a third violation (A.7697).
