ASSEMBLY STANDING COMMITTEE ON CORPORATIONS, AUTHORITIES AND COMMISSIONS NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING |
SUBJECT: |
The Future of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority |
|
|
PURPOSE: |
To receive information from the leadership of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) with respect to their vision for the future maintenance and improvement of the essential services of MTA and their views of the best ways to fund future operations and facility development. |
New York City TESTIMONY WILL BE BY INVITATION ONLY |
The MTA is about to enter into a five-year capital program that involves significant commitments to such mega-projects such as Second Avenue Subway and the East Side Access. Major construction projects in the Lower Manhattan Ground Zero area, on the west side of Midtown and in Brooklyn may result in more need for transportation services. At the same time, the MTA will soon be subject to reform measures covering all authorities. Various questions arise, such as, where does the MTA go from here? How will the MTA operations and expansion projects be funded? What can the Legislature do to assist the overall improvement of the system? It is expected that the Committee will gain valuable insight into the answers to these questions from the testimony of the current MTA leadership. Persons invited to present pertinent testimony to the Committee at the above hearing should complete and return the enclosed reply form as soon as possible. It is important that the reply form be fully completed and returned so that persons may be notified in the event of emergency postponement or cancellation. Oral testimony will be limited to 10 minutes' duration. Ten copies of any prepared testimony should be submitted at the hearing registration desk. The Committee would appreciate advance receipt of prepared statements. In order to meet the needs of those who may have a disability, the Assembly, in accordance with its policy of non-discrimination on the basis of disability, as well as the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), has made its facilities and services available to all individuals with disabilities. For individuals with disabilities, accommodations will be provided, upon reasonable request, to afford such individuals access and admission to Assembly facilities and activities. |
