Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay On The Budget Extender Passed Today

“Passing a budget extender signals to the rest of New York that One-Party Rule is not working. The inability to meet the April 1 deadline illustrates the Albany dysfunction that people have come to expect.

Three Majority lawmakers are deciding the fate of a spending plan that will likely reach $230 billion. Despite the fact that 90 percent of New Yorkers believe crime is an important issue, the highest-ranking Majority members in the state can’t figure out how to properly address it – which is a major reason for the holdup.

The secretive budget process has produced another embarrassing result. Meeting the April 1 deadline is a basic responsibility of the governor and the Legislature. But with no final agreement in sight, New Yorkers still have more questions than answers.”
