Maher Re-Launches Petition to Keep Convicted Killer of Danny Meyer Behind Bars: Parole Hearing Scheduled for August 2025

Assemblyman Brian Maher (R,C–Walden) today announced, which would have been Danny Meyer’s 41st birthday, the re-launch of an online petition to prevent the release of Juan Peinado, the man convicted of murdering 11-year-old Danny in 1996 as the young boy walked to an all-star baseball game in the Village of Maybrook.

Peinado, who has served over 25 years in prison, was first eligible for parole in 2021. That year, an overwhelming public response, including emotional testimony from Danny’s family, helped secure a denial of parole. However, under current state law, violent offenders like Peinado are granted a new parole hearing every two years. His next parole hearing is scheduled for August 2025.

“This is about justice, accountability, and the safety of our communities,” said Maher. “Danny Meyer should be a grown man today, possibly with a family of his own. Instead, his life was cut short in a senseless act of violence that forever changed a family and a community. We will not let that be forgotten.”

Maher is working closely with Danny’s family and childhood friends to circulate the petition and encourage residents across Orange County and New York State to sign and send letters to the New York State Parole Board. The campaign aims to demonstrate continued public opposition to Peinado’s release and make it clear that some crimes are so severe, the perpetrators should never walk free.

“This petition is more than just names on a page — it’s a voice for Danny, and a call for continued justice,” said Maher. “The memory of an innocent child and the pain his family has endured must not be dismissed every two years.”

Maher urges the public to get involved by signing the petition and submitting letters to the Parole Board. Instructions and resources can be found on his official website and social media platforms
