Assemblyman Maher Answers the Call to Serve Both Community and Country

Assemblyman Brian Maher (R,C–Walden) announced that he has been called to active duty as part of the Navy Reserve and will be deployed overseas in a designated combat area for a period of nine months. Maher, who represents New York’s 101st Assembly District, emphasized that while he will be serving his country abroad, his district office will remain fully staffed and operational to continue assisting residents. Maher announced his deployment with a personal letter mailed to each of his more than 138,000 constituents who reside in the 101st Assembly District.

“It has been the honor of my life to serve the people of the 101st District,” said Maher. “As I temporarily fulfill my duties in a different capacity, I want to reassure residents that our commitment to serving them remains steadfast. My team will continue to advocate for your needs with the same passion and diligence that define our office, and I will continue to introduce and advocate for legislation that is important to our communities.”

Maher noted that additional staff members have been hired to strengthen district operations and ensure ongoing communication with constituents across one of the largest Assembly districts in the state. Chief of Staff Meghan Hurlburt and Director of Operations Kristin Mulligan will lead the office during his absence, continuing the standard of service instilled in them by their late mentor, Sen. Bill Larkin, a decorated World War II and Korean War veteran.

“There is no more admirable call to answer than the one to serve your nation. I deeply admire Assemblyman Maher for his unwavering commitment to his country and wish him a safe deployment abroad. I am confident that his staff will continue to serve and meet the needs of the constituents of the 101st district during his absence,” said Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay (R,C-Pulaski).

While deployed, Maher will remain engaged in legislative priorities he has championed, including improving affordability, supporting local businesses, enhancing child care and education access, strengthening mental health services and protecting New York’s correctional officers and first responders.

Maher expressed gratitude to his constituents and asked for continued thoughts and prayers for his wife, Becky, and their three children, Mia, Isla, and Benjamin.

“I will miss my family and my community deeply, but I carry their spirit with me every day,” Maher said. “Serving both my district and my nation is a privilege I do not take lightly. I look forward to returning home in 2026 to continue the work we’ve started together.”

Assemblyman Maher enlisted in the Navy Reserve in July 2018. Over the past seven years, he has been promoted to the rank of Petty Officer Second Class (E-5). Maher’s rating is Logistics Specialist (LS). LS2 Maher has served exclusively with expeditionary warfare units, including a cargo unit based in Lakehurst, NJ and, more recently, logistical support units attached to Navy SEALs and Naval Special Warfare units in Little Creek, VA.
