Assemblyman Brian Maher Supports ‘Lights on with Energy Relief’ Plan to Lower Utility Costs
A press release from Meghan Hurlburt, Assemblyman Brian Maher’s chief of staff
Assemblyman Brian Maher (R,C–Walden) today voiced his strong support for Assembly Minority Leader Ed Ra’s “Lights On With Energy Relief” (LOWER) plan, a comprehensive initiative designed to reduce energy costs for families and strengthen New York’s electric grid.
Maher emphasized that immediate action is needed as electricity prices for residential consumers have risen 47.1% since 2019.
The LOWER plan includes income-based rebate checks of up to $400 for utility ratepayers and would return an estimated $2.4 billion in surplus and uncommitted funds from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s climate investment account directly back to ratepayers. These funds are collected through energy surcharges under the Public Service Commission’s clean energy fund to support clean energy initiatives and should be returned to consumers struggling with rising bills.
Assemblyman Maher also supports advancing a true all-of-the-above energy policy—expanding pipelines, natural gas, nuclear, renewables and other advanced technologies to ensure affordable and reliable power across New York.
“New Yorkers deserve an energy policy that prioritizes affordability, reliability and common sense,” said Meghan Hurlburt, chief of staff to Assemblyman Brian Maher. “Assemblyman Maher supports the LOWER plan because it provides immediate relief for ratepayers while strengthening our grid and restoring balance to our state’s energy strategy.”
Maher remains committed to policies that lower costs for Hudson Valley families, protect grid reliability and ensure New York’s energy future is both sustainable and affordable.
