Area State Legislators Encourage Local Libraries To Take Advantage Of Grant Opportunity

NYSED now accepting applications for Public Library Construction Grant

Elmira, N.Y., August 15—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats), Assemblyman Chris Friend (R,C,I-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) are sending an alert to local public libraries and public library systems of a construction grant opportunity. The New York State Education Department (NYSED) is now accepting grant applications for the Public Library Construction Grant Program. The program offers funding to cover up to 75 percent of the cost per construction project.

In a joint statement, O’Mara, Friend and Palmesano said, “The Public Library Construction Grant Program is an excellent opportunity for our local libraries throughout the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions to improve their facilities. The program not only provides a chance to help our libraries grow and update for the future, but will also offer a local jobs boost without stressing local funds through the availability of up to 75 percent funding from the state.

“Libraries have become increasingly important in our current economic situation, as more and more people rely on their facilities,” the lawmakers continued. “Our libraries offer classes, technology access and internet use that allow people to find new opportunities, build their resumes and search for jobs that might otherwise not be available. With this in mind, it is essential that we continue to develop our library infrastructure and ensure they are as up to date as possible.”

The 2013 State Budget has appropriated $14 million for this NYSED construction program. The program is available to any public library or public library system chartered by the Regents of the State of New York. Eligible project activities include acquisition, construction, and renovation or rehabilitation of a facility. Routine maintenance is not covered by this grant program.

The minimum grant award is $2,500, and projects must have a minimum total cost of $5,000. There is no maximum funding award, but the total number of applications will determine the funding distribution.

The application submission deadline to the State Library is October 10, 2013. However, each public library system will set its own deadline for application submissions from member libraries. Libraries are encouraged to contact their local public library system for submission deadlines.
