Friend: Does The Governor Think Indiana Is More Offensive Than Cuba?
A statement by Assemblyman Christopher S. Friend (R,C,I-Big Flats)
“Today’s decision by Gov. Cuomo to ban non-essential state travel to Indiana because of the decision to reinforce individual religious liberty through its version of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) is highly hypocritical. This governor plans on heading to Cuba to reach out to the brutal Castro regime, which has jailed political dissidents, stifled any sort of civil rights, and imposed a cruel 1950s dictatorship on its people. You cannot be on the first plane to meet the Castros and condemn a state for its reinforcement of the RFRA. Religious liberty is the very cornerstone of this country. The RFRA was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993 and was written by then-Congressman Chuck Schumer. This bill exists on the state level in 19 other states. I would like to see the governor take back this travel ban and impose it on the Castro regime until it delivers its people the same human rights we are afforded in our country, which people under the Castro regime have sought for nearly 60 years.”
