Friend Concerned About Eroding Civil Liberties
Assemblyman Christopher S. Friend (R,C,I-Big Flats) is worried about the harassment of conservative activists in other states, and is growing more concerned that such an environment could infiltrate New York. A recent article by the National Review, “Wisconsin’s Shame: ‘I Thought It Was a Home Invasion’” highlighted the rise of “John Doe” investigations to harass supporters of Gov. Scott Walker (R) of Wisconsin.
“The erosion of civil liberties and civil discourse in the political theater over the past few years has been a stark reminder of just how dehumanized the political process has become,” Friend said. “For those willing to stand up against the entrenched special interests that have dominated politics for decades, it becomes a dangerous venture. No American should be subjected to an investigation because of who they support politically. As free citizens, we have the right to freedom of speech, expression and association. The harassment of political opponents is something I’d expect out of Cuba, not the U.S., and I hope no such instance ever occurs here in New York.”
