Assemblyman David Weprin calls for Public Hearing and City Council approval on Future Chancellor Appointments
New York, NY – Assemblymember David I. Weprin (D-Queens) and Senator-elect Tony Avella held (D-Queens) a press conference on Sunday, December 19, 2010 on the steps of City Hall. Assemblyman Weprin spoke in support of his bill that would amend the state education law to require a public hearing and confirmation of the School Chancellor by the New York City Council.
“It is imperative that this issue be open to public discourse” stated Mr. Weprin. “The recent appointment of Cathleen Black as the New York City School Chancellor was done behind closed doors, without the input of the educators and families that will be deeply affected by this appointment.”
Assemblyman Weprin’s bill would create more transparency in the Chancellor selection process and provide a mechanism for teachers, administrators, parents, and students to voice their concerns.
“The enactment of this bill would stimulate an open dialogue between all interested and affected parties to ensure a thorough and balanced selection process for the leader of the largest school system in the country,” stated Assemblyman Weprin.
