Queens, New York – Assemblyman David Weprin donated boxes of food to City Harvest at their facility in Long Island City. Weprin’s office collected various non-perishable items over the holiday season from generous constituents in his district to benefit food insecure New Yorkers. At the facility, Weprin was received by Jim Dunne, Director of warehouse operations, who also gave the Assemblyman a brief tour. The facility holds nearly 800,000lbs of food and delivers to community partners across the Five Boroughs. Unfortunately, Mr. Dunne expects that the need for food will continue to grow.

Hunger is a large problem in the City. Nearly 1.2 million New York City residents are food insecure which means that these residents are not getting enough food to sustain healthy lifestyle. Many rely on supplemental nutritional resources. In Assemblyman Weprin’s district over 10% of residents in Community Boards 8, 9, & 10 rely on SNAP. City Harvest was started in 1982, by residents who realized that the City’s excess food could be used to feed hungry families. The organization now rescues 61 million pounds of food annually.
