Celebrating Tom Duane
The New York State Senate will be losing a progressive icon as Senator Tom Duane announced his retirement. I have known Senator Duane for more than 25 years, as a friend and colleague, and I have been consistently amazed by his dedication to the community during his many years of service.
Senator Duane's tireless fight for marriage equality is well known, but his other legislative accomplishments speak to his commitment for justice and equality for all. He has been a vociferous advocate on behalf of rent stabilized tenants, prisoners, those living with AIDS, and numerous other marginalized groups that have fought for equality. Tom's great voice, and stupendous delivery, ensured that these groups never lacked someone with great courage and conviction to speak on their behalf. Tom's dramatic stage presence ensured that once he began speaking no one could turn away.
Tom is a true New Yorker and truly a man of the people. I am personally saddened that he is leaving the Senate but feel enormously fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him and his terrific staff all of these years. His presence in Albany will be sorely missed.
