Assemblymember Barrett Encourages Summer Reading and Announces Funding for Local Libraries
Assemblymember Didi Barrett (D-Hudson) announces her support for summer reading programs across her district as well as funding for four libraries in Columbia and Dutchess counties. These libraries will receive more than $256,000 to help expand, renovate and improve their facilities through funding Barrett secured as part of the 2016-17 state budget.
“Summer is a great time to encourage kids to turn away from their phones and tune into a book instead. Our libraries are magical places to explore new ideas and discover new adventures,” Barrett said. “They not only lend books, videos and music, but also provide workshops, technology, reading programs and job search resources. I love being able to provide support for the wonderful libraries in our district.”
The Mid-Hudson Library System was awarded $20,000 through a special legislative project grant, thanks to Barrett, to support summer reading programs at 16 public libraries in the 106th Assembly District.
“We thank Assemblymember Barrett for her support of summer reading programs,” said Tom Sloan, executive director of the Mid-Hudson Library System. “Assemblymember Barrett’s support is vital to providing this essential education program which advances the excitement of reading and learning that takes place in the classroom.”
The Stanford Free Library in Dutchess County will receive $136,061 to prepare a site for their new library building.
“This grant wouldn't be possible without the full support of Assemblymember Didi Barrett; she understands the importance of libraries to our communities,” Stanford Library Board President Mark Williams said. “The Stanford Library is thrilled with this grant and it will help make our new library possible.”
The Claverack Free Library in Columbia County will receive $88,793 to expand the construction of its new library project being developed in a repurposed fire station.
“The Claverack Library Board of Trustees is excited to continue our ongoing project of renovating an old firehouse to create a new and larger library for Claverack,” said Jane Case, president of the Claverack Library Board of Trustees. “Receipt of this grant allows us to begin the next phase of work and moves us closer to the final phases. We are grateful to Assemblymember Barrett for her continued support and dedication to local libraries.”
The Hyde Park Library in Dutchess County will receive $33,672 to install a stair lift and implement energy conservation projects. The Hudson Area Association Library in Columbia County will receive $5,259 to renovate the History Room and administrative offices.
Barrett has been a long-time supporter of public libraries, working closely with her Mid-Hudson libraries since she was first elected, producing Women’s History Month booklets each March that the libraries distribute to the community to increase understanding of the role of pioneering Hudson Valley women.
“Our libraries are the gateway to new knowledge and lifelong learning,” Barrett said. “By supporting our local libraries, we build strong communities and foster a new generation of readers and leaders who are curious about the world.”
