Assemblyman Ed Ra Announces Winner of 2026 ‘There Ought to Be a Law’ Contest
Assembly Minority Leader Ed Ra (R-Franklin Square) hosted his eighth annual “There Ought to Be a Law” ceremony on Monday, June 22 at Mineola High School, where he recognized 30 semi-finalists selected from 553 entries submitted by fifth-grade students across nine local schools. The annual contest invites students to think critically about ideas they think might make good laws.
This year’s winning proposal was submitted by Gabriella Rodia of Polk Street School. Her idea highlights the importance of mental health days as a way to combat exhaustion, restore patience and help individuals return to work calmer and better equipped to handle challenges. Under Gabriella’s proposed law, employees would be able to take mental health days for their own well‑being, not only when a doctor’s note or physical illness is involved.
“Giving students the opportunity to learn about the legislative process helps them understand that their ideas matter and they can make a difference in their communities,” said Ra. “Every year, I’m impressed by the creativity these students bring to the contest. Congratulations to Gabriella on her winning proposal, and thank you to all the students who took the time to develop ideas aimed at improving the lives of others. I’m proud of the effort and thoughtfulness each of you brought to this year’s contest.”
