Jacobson Calls for Moving New York State Tax Filing Deadline to May 17th to match IRS
Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson (D-104) is calling on Governor Cuomo to extend New York State’s tax filing deadline to correspond with the new Internal Revenue Service’s filing deadline of May 17, 2021.
“New York taxpayers prepare their taxes with an eye to the usual state and federal deadline of April 15th,” said Jacobson. “Yesterday, the IRS announced that it would extend this year’s federal tax deadline to May 17, 2021, so it just makes sense that New York State do the same.
“Now more than ever, people need certainty. The past year has been challenging enough without the added confusion of having to negotiate two different tax filing deadlines.”
The IRS, which is currently processing the third round of pandemic relief payments, announced its extended deadline yesterday.
“In addition to giving taxpayers more time to prepare their taxes after a difficult year, extending the deadline will allow them to take advantage of changes to the tax code including the tax exemption on the first $10,200 of unemployment income.”
Jacobson is also calling on the state to give the same exemption to unemployment benefits. Currently, unemployment benefits are fully taxed. Jacobson is pushing to put this change in the state budget which is due April 1.
