Brabenec Reacts To Teacher Evaluation Delay
State Education Department Determined Deadline For Process “Unrealistic”
Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R,C,I-Deerpark) today was unsurprised by the news that the State Education Department announced a lengthy delay for the new teacher evaluation system enacted in this year’s budget. Brabenec, who along with his Assembly Minority colleagues fought against this measure in a marathon debate last month, sees this as another sign of the governor’s inappropriate, doomed education policies.
“I’m glad to see the Education Department has seen the writing on the wall concerning teacher evaluations,” said Brabenec. “My colleagues and I were strong in our opposition to this system for the very reason for the department’s delay: the parameters and implications of it are simply untenable.
“A large portion of our budget process was dedicated to ramming this terrible policy through the Legislature and into law. It’s clear to everyone that Albany mandates on education aren’t working, which is why I proudly co-sponsor the APPLE Plan to reassert local control and input back into our education system.
“Going forward, I plan to keep fighting on behalf of our students and teachers so our education system can get it right,” Brabenec concluded.
