Brabenec Fighting To Protect Child Abuse Survivors
Brabenec Attends Albany Press Conference To Rally Support For Child Victims Act
Yesterday, Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R,C,I-Deerpark) attended a press conference in Albany to garner support for the Child Victims Act of New York. If passed into law, it would eliminate both the criminal and civil statute of limitations for child sex abuse offenses. As a sponsor of the legislation, Brabenec highlighted the absurd way New York handles the sexual abuse of children.
“The survivors of childhood sexual abuse don’t have a time limit on their suffering and anguish, and there shouldn’t be any limit on the ability to prosecute an attacker,” said Brabenec. “It’s not uncommon for survivors to be unable to comprehend what happened until they are much older. The existing statute of limitations on childhood sex abuse protects pedophiles and hurts the public. Passing the Child Victims Act will bring closure and justice to the families we’re talking about. This should be a top priority for the state Legislature.”
