Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-C Utica/Rome) and local first responders hosted a discussion today, Nov. 13, at Mohawk Valley Community College with Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Dakota Meyer to review leadership skills and experiences in his careers. The event featured enriching conversations about overcoming adversities, believing in oneself, doing what’s right and serving as a leader for others.

“Many of our veterans and first responders are humble heroes in our communities,” said Buttenschon. I thank Sergeant Meyer for sharing his insights and commend him for his continued bravery back at home by sharing his experiences to help others.”

“It is truly remarkable that Sgt. Dakota Meyer visited Mohawk Valley Community College today to talk with the students about his achievements and service to his country. There are few as courageous as Sgt. Meyer, and none more deserving of the Medal of Honor, the military’s highest honor. As a fellow U.S. Marine Corps veteran, I commend Sgt. Meyer for his valiant efforts during the Battle of Ganjigal, and I thank him for his service to his country. I look forward to seeing what he accomplishes in the future,” said Assemblyman Robert Smullen (R-C Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks).

Alongside Meyer, Buttenschon was joined by the Utica Fire Department, Utica Police Department, Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Veterans Outreach Center, and the Genesis Group. During the meeting, Meyer talked about his advocacy work experiences, what motivates and inspires him, and the events that led to him receiving the Medal of Honor in 2011. This event wouldn’t have taken place without the efforts of Lt. Corrigan of the Utica Fire Department.
