Yesterday, The New York State Assembly passed legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-C Marcy) to ease regulations on how farmers reuse tires (A8625).

"In 2016, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) overhauled its solid waste regulations and imposed strict restrictions on the way farmers reuse tires. While the DEC later revised these rules, they still are a burden to our farmers," said Assemblywoman Buttenschon. "I am proud that the New York State Assembly unanimously passed my legislation to expand the department's authorization to analyze and study how farmers reuse their tires in hopes the allow practical exceptions."

It is extremely common in farming to reuse waste tires to hold down tarps that cover animal feed. This practice prevents fermentation and mold development. It important to ensure that animals and the food products they produce are healthy, and with this passed legislation to assist farmers it secures that.

"I want to thank my colleagues for passing this commonsense legislation that will allow the DEC to study the beneficial ways farmers reuse their tires," said Buttenschon. "Our farmers are a critical part of New York State's economy; we must remove unnecessary regulations that hinder them. I will always work in the Assembly to ensure our farmers are not hampered by red tape."
