Today, Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-C Marcy) announced the start of the New York State Assembly's annual Summer Reading Challenge in partnership with New York State Libraries. She visited Gansevoort Elementary School to kick off the challenge.

“The Summer Reading Challenge asks children to read for at least 15 minutes a day for at least 40 days during July and August. Children can read by themselves or with a partner,” explained Assemblywoman Buttenschon.“Afterward, they mark the days they read on the calendar provided. After marking 40 days or more, they can submit the calendar to my office to receive a certificate in the mail.”

Assemblywoman Buttenschon was joined by Rome City School District Superintendent Michael Hoose.

“The ability to read is the very foundation of a sound education,” said Superintendent Hoose. “It makes a monumental difference in the quality of a person’s life and employment.”

The theme for this year’s challenge, “Adventure Begins at Your Library,” celebrates the journeys books can take students on, whether transporting them to a different world or delving into our history. Readers who complete the challenge can receive a state Assembly Excellence in Reading certificate.

"Reading is a fundamental skill that lays the foundation for our children's future success. The Summer Reading Challenge not only makes reading a fun and engaging activity for our students during the summer break, but it also reinforces the importance of this skill," remarked Buttenschon. "I urge all students, parents, and educators to participate in this challenge."
