New York State Assembly Passes Assemblywoman Buttenschon’s Legislation to Expand the Veterans Tuition Awards Program
Today, Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-C Marcy) announced that her legislation to expand the eligibility of the veteran's tuition awards program has passed the New York State Assembly (A9205).
“New York State is home to the fifth largest veteran population in the country with over 800,000 military veterans. Despite having such a large number of veterans, only those who served in active combat roles are eligible for the veteran’s tuition awards program,” said Assemblywoman Buttenschon. “My legislation expands the eligibility to all veterans, no matter their role, so that they can qualify for this program."
The veteran tuition awards program offers funding for up to the total cost of undergraduate or graduate tuition for New York State residents at a SUNY school. The program also provides tuition for approved vocational training programs.
“We cannot thank the Assemblywoman enough for all she does for our veterans and their families,” said Vincent Scalise, founder of the Utica Center for Development. “Being able to have additional benefits made available is a true way of thanking our veterans for their service.
“Because of the sacrifices our veterans have made for our freedoms and our country, we have a moral obligation to provide them with the necessary resources to help them transition back to civilian life. One of the best ways we can do this is by helping achieve a higher education,” said Buttenschon. “I want to thank my colleagues for joining me in supporting our veterans and I call on the Governor to sign this bill into law.”
