Oriskany, NY – Today, Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon visited the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office to present Sheriff Rob Maciol with a New York State Assembly Resolution honoring the Office of Sheriff in recognition of Sheriff’s Week in the State of New York, observed this year from September 14th through the 20th.

Honoring the State’s sheriffs and deputies who serve on the front lines of public safety, Sheriff’s Week in the State of New York serves to recognize the dedicated men and women who have answered the call to preserve and protect the safety of our communities with unwavering courage, leadership, and commitment. Today, the duties of the Office of Sheriff encompass numerous facets of public service, including county-wide law enforcement, maintaining county correctional facilities, providing court security, dispatching emergency services, serving and executing the civil process for the court system, and, through the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office's School Resource Officer and Special Patrol Officer programs, safeguarding students and staff in schools across Oneida County.

Established in the first Constitution of the newly formed State of New York, the Office of Sheriff is historically one of the first public offices established in colonial America and has remained an integral role in the state’s criminal justice system ever since. While the function, status, and powers of the Office has changed over the course of our history, the Office of Sheriff has remained a constant and invaluable presence within the law enforcement community of New York State.
