Assemblywoman Buttenschon Passes Resolution to Honor National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-Utica/Rome) announced that a resolution she introduced to recognize October 2021 as Disability Employment Awareness Month in New York State has passed the Assembly (K.291).

“Individuals with disabilities have contributed so much to New York and continue to climb the ladder and serve an essential role in our workforce,” Buttenschon said. “After this difficult year, where workplace norms were challenged, altered or uprooted altogether, it’s more important than ever that we commemorate the accomplishments of these hardworking men and women as well as advocate for equal employment opportunities for all as we begin to return from remote working. Every New Yorker deserves to pursue their careers in an inclusive and fair workplace, and I’ll always be a strong voice for this important cause so we can build on the progress we’ve made and help ensure a bright future for every member of our community.”

National Disability Employment Awareness Month is a national campaign that aims to raise awareness about disability employment issues and celebrate the many contributions workers with disabilities have made to the nation. The theme this year is “Increasing Access and Opportunity.”

Buttenschon, along with Senator John Mannion (D-Geddes) who sponsored the resolution in the state Senate, helped pass the resolution today and look forward to celebrating the month of October as Disability Employment Awareness Month in New York State.

“I strongly support efforts to raise awareness of job opportunities and career pathways that are catered to I/DD New Yorkers. Unemployment in this community is estimated at 70 percent or higher - this is unacceptable and unnecessary. We need to work together to create, support, and fund programs that connect these workers with the many companies that value their contributions,” Senator John W. Mannion (D-Geddes) Chair of the Senate Disabilities Committee said.

“The IDD sector is honored by this recognition. We applaud Assemblywoman Buttenschon, Senator Mannion and their colleagues for their continued advocacy for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Our allies in the Assembly and Senate have been critical partners in advancing issues important to our sector. We look forward to our continued partnership,” Tom McAlvanah, President of New York Disability Advocates stated.
